Sequoia Restaurant Wedding

Portraits at DC War Memorial prior to Sequoia Restaurant wedding

Summer weddings in Washington, DC, have a very particular energy to them. The city feels softer near the water, the evenings stretch a little longer, and venues like Sequoia Restaurant almost completely transform once the light starts reflecting off the Potomac. Paige and Andrew’s wedding captured that atmosphere perfectly with a classic blue and white palette centered around masses of hydrangea, a ceremony at the DC War Memorial, and a reception that felt elegant without losing the ease of a summer celebration.

Prior to the ceremony, the couple started the day with photos on the Watergate rooftop, at the Kennedy Center and then the DC War Memorial, all quietly beautiful locations in the city. The DC War Memorial in particular is surrounded by trees and tucked just off the National Mall, the memorial has an intimacy that surprises guests every time. Layered white and blue blooms felt natural against the marble architecture and summer greenery. Hydrangea was the foundation of the floral design throughout the day. Shades of crisp white and soft blue created a palette that felt timeless and refined while still reading distinctly seasonal. The flowers brought fullness and texture to the arrangements without needing excessive complexity, which suited both the ceremony and waterfront reception beautifully.

Paige’s bouquet carried the same overall feeling as the wedding itself: classic, romantic, and effortless. The blue and white flowers created softness and movement while still maintaining a polished look that fit seamlessly within the black tie atmosphere of the day. The bridesmaids, clad in pale blue dresses, carried bouquets in a simpler form with the same shades of blue and white carried through with roses, delphinium and more.

Following a traditional ceremony at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the wedding proceeded to Sequoia Restaurant for the festive celebration. One of the reasons we love designing for a Sequoia Restaurant wedding is that the venue already gives couples so much visually. The expansive windows, river views, and location along the Georgetown waterfront naturally create drama, particularly during summer evenings when the light pours into the reception space. Floral design here works best when it enhances the setting rather than competing with it.

For the reception, blue and white hydrangea arrangements helped bring cohesion throughout the room while keeping the overall design clean and inviting. The palette echoed the water and sky outside without becoming overly thematic, something that can be difficult to balance with blue wedding flowers.

There is something enduring about blue and white wedding flowers, especially in the summer. They never feel trendy in a way that quickly dates a wedding, and they photograph beautifully in natural light. Paige & Andrew’s wedding leaned into that timelessness while still feeling fresh, relaxed, and fully connected to the season.

Paige and Andrew’s Sequoia Restaurant wedding was a beautiful reminder that classic wedding design does not need to feel overly formal or complicated. Sometimes a thoughtful palette, beautiful flowers, candlelight, and an incredible setting are exactly enough.

Theres something about September that always feels like a turning point. The days are still warm, but the morning is a bit cooler. School is back in session. The light starts to change. And after a long DC summer, you do all get that first day when you can open the door and think, yes, fall really is coming. 🍁

For me fall has always been tied to the rhythm of the school year. Kids going back to school and calendars filling up. Pulling sweaters out of the back of the closet, and thinking about Halloween before you’re quite ready to admit summer is over.

In the studio, autumn has another rhythm. September and October weddings - arguably our busiest time of the year - paired with all sorts of fun things. Pods, berries, grasses and all sorts of funky things.

I think there’s a reason fall weddings always feel so right. It’s a season built around change. The landscape shifts, the light softens, the year begins winding down… and in the midst of that, two people choose to begin something.

Maybe that’s what I love about this time of year. Autumn can feel nostalgic and hopeful at the same time. So here’s to another fall wedding season, changing leaves, cooler nights (no mosquitoes), celebrations and all the new beginnings still ahead.
Classic roses. Ethereal baby’s breath. And bleached ruscus for some fashion forward style. Classic with an edge.
