Some weddings feel especially at home inside DAR’s historic spaces, and Clara & John’s wedding was one of them. Their celebration combined the classic architecture of DAR with a softer, more playful floral direction filled with layered pastels, airy movement, candlelight, and garden-inspired textures.
The overall design leaned whimsical and colorful rather than overly formal, which created a really beautiful contrast against the stately interior of the O’Byrne Gallery at DAR. Instead of relying on one dominant color, the palette moved through peach, coral, blush, butter yellow, lavender, and soft blue tones that felt fresh and painterly without becoming overly sweet.
Clara carried a gardenesque hand-tied bouquet designed in layered shades of pink, peach, orange, yellow, and blue. Coral peonies, Pink O’Hara garden roses, ranunculus, lisianthus, chamomile daisies, delphinium, snapdragons, and scabiosa created an airy, richly textured shape finished with jasmine vine foliage. The bridesmaids carried smaller versions of the bridal bouquet, keeping the same loose garden-inspired feeling throughout the personal flowers. Orange ranunculus boutonnieres accented with jasmine vine added another subtle pop of color against classic dark suits, with a hot pink ranunculus setting the groom apart.
One of our favorite design elements from the reception was the mix of Chinoiserie bud vases and ginger jars with low compote arrangements throughout the tablescape. The blue-and-white vessels worked especially well within DAR because they echoed the traditional architecture while still feeling youthful and current.
Rather than creating identical centerpieces across every table, the reception used a layered mix of floral moments. Some tables featured collections of bud vases filled with garden roses, chamomile daisies, stock, ranunculus, and scabiosa in pastel tones, while others incorporated lush low compote arrangements with textured garden flowers and delicate movement. Candlelight helped tie everything together. Blush taper candles and glass-enclosed candles added warmth throughout the reception without competing with the flowers. That balance kept the room feeling elegant while still allowing the color palette to stay front and center.
The head table became a focal point with layered florals, Chinoiserie vessels, bud vases, and pastel taper candles extending the full length of the table. The result felt collected and romantic rather than overly structured, which fit the couple’s overall vision perfectly.
Clara & John’s wedding is such a good example of how DAR weddings can feel personal and fresh while still embracing the venue’s historic character. The combination of whimsical florals, layered pastel tones, and garden-inspired details created a reception that felt joyful, elevated, and completely suited to a summer wedding in Washington DC.
