Modern Newseum Wedding

If it’s one thing we love in Washington, DC it’s our spectacular rooftops and views! This modern Newseum wedding proves that different can be beautiful. When Sara and Andrew began their process, their vision for the wedding was unique. They wanted a modern design with bold color, whimsical shapes and textures, and strong color contrast. Sara and Andrew’s wedding at Newseum in Washington, DC featured stunning views, spectacular blooms and, of course, lots of love!

Shaded Palette

The bouquets were gorgeous combination of classic garden flowers with unique accents. Sara’s bridal bouquet was created on the softer side of the palette, embracing a range of white and pale peach hues. Among the flowers in the French hand-tied design were peach Juliet garden roses, white roses and spray roses, white lisianthus, white mini-calla lilies, white stock, and white scabiosa. Her bridesmaids’ bouquets popped against their teal-hued gowns, with their peach Juliet garden roses, roses and spray roses in varying shades of orange, orange coxcomb, and orange dahlia. The groom and groomsmen each wore striking boutonnieres featuring orange spray roses accented with artful loops of bear grass.

Ceremony with a View

Sara and Andrew’s chuppah was a clean-lined, modern white structure supporting a ruched white fabric. An asymmetrical design of flowers anchored the top left corner, while an opposing piece balanced the lower right side. The flowers reflected a dazzling palette of rich oranges – roses and spray roses, mokara orchids, snapdragons, pin cushion protea and Chinese lanterns. The effect for the modern Newseum wedding ceremony was striking and dramatic against the cloud-dappled skyline, and a perfect frame for the Capitol in the distance.

Cocktail Hour & Reception

At the reception, the couple’s escort table was set with a collection of tapered glass vases, each displaying a rich profusion of orange crocosmia, orange pin cushion protea, orange roses, orange snapdragons, orange mokara orchids, orange dahlia, and orange spray roses.

As guests progressed to the reception at the modern Newseum wedding, they’re greeted with long tables dressed in bright blue linens. The linens featured a series of white glass rectangle vases of varying heights. Each vase was filled with a lush, textured design of orange flowers, from romantic and classic roses, spray roses, and dahlia to more unique blooms such as coxcomb, Chinese lantern, and orchids. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were a beautiful accompaniment to their one-of-a-kind cake!

Paired with candlelight, the look was more harvest elegance than Halloween. Texture, repetition, and color did the storytelling. It is proof that seasonal details can feel sophisticated when they are thoughtfully chosen and placed with intention.⁣

The florals carried that spirit through every detail: moss runners lined the tables, dotted with petite brown bottles of chamomile, blush spray roses, and wisps of greenery that felt as if they had grown there overnight. Cloche domes held tiny blooms like keepsakes. Brass animals cradled florals as though part of the garden itself, a perfect nod to the nature sanctuary venue. (Which ones can you find?) Even the greenery-lined staircase framing the cake echoed the same story. Every bloom was chosen for texture and movement, bringing that painterly, botanical world to life in three dimensions.

We call it the creep…

Everyone talks about the rising cost of flowers, but there’s another story behind the numbers: time. Over the years, wedding timelines have stretched. First looks, detail shots, getting-ready portraits, ceremony and reception setups starting hours earlier than before, and more complex with event breakdowns. Florists are often still paid by the piece, not by the hour, yet the hours have multiplied.

What was once a 2 to 4 hour delivery day has quietly turned into a 12 to 16 hour production days with setup, standby, and late-night breakdowns. And flowers are still perishable, so they cannot sit out waiting for the photography timeline to catch up.

When couples ask why flowers cost more now, this is part of the answer. It is not just about stems or supply chains. It is the labor, the logistics, and the reality that perfection takes time, often a lot more than it used to.
