Year of the Elopement

Year of the Elopement

This year like no other has been the year of the elopement. Masks, social distancing, travel restrictions, gathering guidelines… These have all been challenges our couples have had to face. Many of our couples have opted to simply get married – whether or not a party next year is in the works – or simply keep it to their nearest and dearest to witness the nuptials.

Rooftop Elopement

We first met Inra and Andrew as they were initially planning for a larger wedding at the Westin Georgetown. They were the first of our weddings to dramatically change plans and embrace weddings as they were to be for 2020. *Out* was the big reception. *In* was the officiant and the streaming capabilities! And what a year to be thankful for technology to bring us together. They booked their a la carte needs – a stunning modern white bouquet for Inra of white O’Hara garden roses, white lisianthus, white stock, and the most stunning white dahlia and a matching boutonniere for Andrew – through our intimate weddings shop site, and off they went!

Backyard I Dos

Brigid and Robert had initially planned for a ceremony and reception at Riverview at Occoquan. As we shared with many of our couples originally planning this year, there are very real reasons, financial and otherwise, for getting married. And in the words of Harry in When Harry Met Sally, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Brigid and Robert elected to go forward with their nuptials at Robert’s family home. With bouquet in hand and surrounded by a few family members, their at-home elopement is as romantic and dreamy as any you could imagine.

Going to the Chapel

Out of consideration for the pandemic and restrictions on gatherings, Erin and Joel decided to proceed with a very small ceremony at their church, and postpone the reception until next year. Their August wedding, full of wildflowers, embraces all the best of the season. They opted for a slightly more laid back feel for the smaller elopement. We adore Erin’s simple white summer dress, and truly we just can’t get enough of her wildflower crown!!

A rooftop celebration that proves timeless can still be bold. For Elaine & Trey’s wedding at Capitol View at 400, we leaned into classic green and white, but elevated it with sculptural greenery installations, gold Harlow stands, and skyline views that stretched for miles. A ceiling of foliage softened the tented space, while sleek black bridesmaid dresses added contrast and edge. Clean, refined, and impossibly romantic.

It’s Bike to Work Day — and while we usually pedal toward petals, we couldn’t resist sharing this creative twist from Elle & Bryan, one of our couples who wheeled their love of cycling straight into the ceremony. 🚲✨

Elle & Bryan’s wedding at Dumbarton House was full of charm, personal touches, and one especially fun nod to their love of cycling. Bicycle wheels became sculptural backdrops, proving that when it comes to personal touches, there’s no such thing as too niche.

Designing florals around unexpected objects? That’s our lane. And yes — it was all uphill in the best possible way.
