In a rare opportunity, our bride gave us carte blanche for her DC winter mini-wedding flowers. Leaving wedding flowers as a surprise can be a great hit!
Contrary to popular belief, winter is a fabulous time for flowers, particularly with a global floral industry. The bride’s bouquet featured a mix of delicate garden flowers and exotic tropical blooms. Delicate white lilac (a long-standing, practically signature Petal’s Edge favorite), white sweet pea, sumptuous white cattleya orchids for an exotic flair, fluffy white ranunculus and whimsical fringed tulips finished with champagne-toned roses. It was a lush accompaniment to the bride’s otherwise understated attire. A particular favorite amongst the wedding party’s “floral couture” was the mother of the bride’s posy – a delicate design of green lady’s slipper orchids (a favorite of hers), white lilac and white sweet pea. The unusual green-and-white striations along the lady slipper’s petals was so absolutely swoon-worthy.
The ceremony took place at the gorgeous St. Matthew’s Cathedral. That gargantuan place for a nuptial so small? Well, there are small chapels at this storied church, and since the wedding was small, the ceremony was held in the tiny St. Francis chapel (located at the front of the cathedral). The back of the bride and groom’s ceremony seats were accented with small clutches of flowers in the signature white and pink hues, while two small altar arrangements graced the altar in front.
Following the intimate but traditional wedding ceremony, the couple spent some time promenading along busy downtown M St. with a bagpiper in tow to take some photographs. Doesn’t that sound divine? Well… if you like bag pipes it is. And we do!
Finally, the small group headed down to the Inn at Little Washington, in Washington, Virginia, for a fabulous, over-the-top dinner at the kitchen table. Oh what a night!
