One of the things we love most about designing weddings in Washington, DC is that they happen everywhere: historic mansions, art museums, rooftop terraces, and sometimes in places couples never even realized could host a celebration. Over the years, Petal’s Edge has created wedding flowers in some wonderfully unexpected spaces. One of our favorites was Lacey and Evan’s fall wedding at St. Albans School.
Located on the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue near the National Cathedral, St. Alban’s School is best known as an exclusive boy’s school in the Washington, DC area. But the intimate chapel and wood-lined refectory were also the site of their nuptials and celebration.
Lacey’s aesthetic was deep on color when it came to the flowers. A classic red rose bouquet, and orchids and roses in festive shades of pink, yellow and orange to contrast with her bridesmaids’ neutral brown dresses.
Their ceremony took place in the Little Sanctuary on the school’s beautiful cathedral close campus. The chapel itself is intimate and steeped in history, which made it the perfect setting for a romantic ceremony. The intimate space was originally built to house significant church furnishings, such as the Glastonbury Cathedral and Jerusalem Altar. The space is dominated by a stunning stained glass wall and to the left a brass baptismal font. To accent the ceremony, soft, natural textures were seated in the brass container, complementing the architecture rather than overwhelming it. The result felt warm, welcoming, and quietly elegant, exactly the kind of setting where every guest feels close to the moment.
Following the ceremony, guests made their way to the Cafritz Refectory for the reception. Spaces like this are where thoughtful floral design really shines. A refectory isn’t a traditional ballroom, but with the right approach it transforms beautifully into a lively, celebratory reception. Tables were layered with flowers that felt abundant yet relaxed, bringing softness and color into the room while allowing the architecture and energy of the celebration to take center stage. The sweetheart table featured a lush garland with flowers in vibrant reds, oranges, pinks, and yellows.
Weddings like Lacey and Sean’s are a reminder that incredible celebrations don’t require a conventional venue. Some of the most memorable events happen in places couples already have a connection to… a school, a campus chapel, a favorite institution in the city.
After designing thousands of weddings across Washington, one thing continues to be true: give us a meaningful space and a wonderful couple, and we’ll find a way to make it bloom.
