While the majority of event design work at Petal’s Edge is for luxury weddings, every so often, we get the change to design a fun corporate event. There’s nothing we love more than letting our creative talents loose! Coinciding with a Dia de los Muertos exhibition at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC, our event design team tackled everything from centerpieces, to bar and buffet focals for the luncheon. We were careful to creating various design elements while thoughtfully researching the culture and motifs to be incorporated. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration that typically takes place on November 1-2, and is most widely observed in Mexico. It is observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage. While it takes place around the same general time of year as Halloween, it is a distinct occasion with its own unique elements that reflect a joyful celebration rather than mourning.
On theme with the exhibition and event at the Mexican Cultural Institute, we took inspiration from the bright colors, paper picado, and sugar skulls to create a tablescape of seasonal flowers and candles that set an amazing scene. We used an array of blooms like marigolds, butterfly bush, craspedia, dahlia, roses and coxcomb. We additionally incorporated butterflies, since the annual celebration frequently coincides with the annual migration of the monarch butterflies, another reason why we also leaned heavily on butterfly-attracting flowers.
