Meridian House Wedding with Succulents

Meridian House Wedding with Succulents

Bouquet for Meridian House wedding in DC

There are times when you meet a couple, and you just immediately click on developing the design. You understand their ideas, and they response excitedly to yours. It’s a dynamic process, and this was definitely the case with Chris and Debbie. The only thing we looked forward to as much as the wedding was seeing the photographic evidence afterwards!

They planned their wedding for last August with a vision for an organic Meridian House wedding.  The design followed suit with Debbie’s stunning bouquet of succulents and air plants. I still swoon when I see photos of the bouquet. Succulents continued as an accent in the maid of honor’s bouquet, as well as in the boutonnieres.

The ceremony in the garden was simple but lush and green.  Chairs on both sides of the aisle held posies with an eclectic mix of foliage – tropical aspidistra leaves, magnolia, variegated boxwood, looped bear grasses, and seeded eucalyptus.  Continuing the green motif, simple designs of boxwood in mint julep cups were placed on the cocktail tables.

When guests arrived at the site, they were greeted with elegant and sculptural moss orbs finished with a beehive design of ivy. These were places on the two sideboard tables in the front foyer. The most striking element of the wedding was a tablescape of moss, succulents, brunea pods, pillar candles, and moss animal topiaries – a dog, a cat, and a rabbit. Andrea and Chris provided us with wood disks that served as a platform for the escort cards.  The table was anchored on one side with a hand-made card box fashioned to look like a tree trunk.

The guest tables had a mix of two centerpieces.  Half the tables received a low bowl with a textured and organic design of succulents, aloe plant, brunea pods, berzillia berries, boxwood, and seeded eucalyptus finished with touches of lotus pods and air plant.  For the remainder of the tables, a collection of glass vases help different green elements – a floating aquatic plant, a submerged stem of green orchids topped with a floating candle, and a terrarium holding a miniature white orchid. Even the cake was finished with organic succulent and air plant details!

We are back at Woodend this coming week, and it has us reminiscing about Amanda and Jack’s whimsical, wonderful, William Morris-inspired dream of a wedding with an Art Nouveau twist. The wedding layered bohemian textures, vintage details, woodland creatures and, of course, romantic blooms into a palette that felt both grounded and poetic. Think climbing vines, golden light, and flowers that felt like they had stepped out of an heirloom wallpaper print - in the best way. We’re still swooning. 💫

A rooftop celebration that proves timeless can still be bold. For Elaine & Trey’s wedding at Capitol View at 400, we leaned into classic green and white, but elevated it with sculptural greenery installations, gold Harlow stands, and skyline views that stretched for miles. A ceiling of foliage softened the tented space, while sleek black bridesmaid dresses added contrast and edge. Clean, refined, and impossibly romantic.
