Flower Crush: Lilac

Flower Crush: Lilac

The flower everyone really means when they tell you what their favorite flower is.

Lilac… Is there a flower as lush, as dripping with dreamy, soft-focus nostalgia? Okay, yes, maybe, but lilac is certainly among the BEST of the best. ; ) With some of our collective floral experience spent working in flower shops across the US, we’ve had a chance to talk face-to-face with countless customers about what their flower faves were. Though it’s not surprising, time and time and time again, it’s lilac. It seems to have a spell-binding effect over some folks that just isn’t seen as often with other blooms. For many, it can conjure up fond memories of summertime or childhood; memories of simpler times. Like your grandmother’s garden or walking home from school on warm afternoons. As with many spring flowers, the anticipation of the arrival of this flower’s heady, sweetly-scented presence seems to lend itself to the headlong motion of spring. It’s even rumored that some flower shops have special secret customers call lists so that these special enthusiasts can get first notice of the woody-stemmed flower’s arrival! Excited about lilac yet? Trust us, so are we.

So, whether you’re a long-time lover or have new crush, whether it’s another flower entirely who holds your heart, we here at Petal’s Edge raise a big, heaping bouquet of good wishes for a happy spring to you and yours! Here’s to your fond memories, the simpler times, and to all the good times yet to be had.

Lilac Facts:

Season: Spring to mid-summer. The warmer the spring, the earlier lilac will bloom!

Colors: Crisp, clean whites and soft, pastel purples to deep blue-purple or pink-purple.

When to Use: When you want ultimate fragrance and lushness or a straight-from-the-garden feel. A decadently draping classic flower that can also easily lend its charm to more modern styles. This flower is definitely more of an honored guest and less of a “type cast” flower.

A rooftop celebration that proves timeless can still be bold. For Elaine & Trey’s wedding at Capitol View at 400, we leaned into classic green and white, but elevated it with sculptural greenery installations, gold Harlow stands, and skyline views that stretched for miles. A ceiling of foliage softened the tented space, while sleek black bridesmaid dresses added contrast and edge. Clean, refined, and impossibly romantic.

It’s Bike to Work Day — and while we usually pedal toward petals, we couldn’t resist sharing this creative twist from Elle & Bryan, one of our couples who wheeled their love of cycling straight into the ceremony. 🚲✨

Elle & Bryan’s wedding at Dumbarton House was full of charm, personal touches, and one especially fun nod to their love of cycling. Bicycle wheels became sculptural backdrops, proving that when it comes to personal touches, there’s no such thing as too niche.

Designing florals around unexpected objects? That’s our lane. And yes — it was all uphill in the best possible way.
