Woodland-Inspired Josephine Butler Parks Center Wedding

Wedding chuppah for Josephine Butler Parks Center wedding

Judith and Ben’s wedding at the Josephine Butler Parks Center embraced fall in a way that felt warm, layered, and inviting rather than overly themed. Rich seasonal flowers, textured greenery, lantern candlelight, and woodland-inspired details transformed the historic DC venue into a celebration that felt elegant while still deeply personal.

The floral palette centered around autumn tones of rust, burnt orange, peach, burgundy, and forest green accented with berries, ferns, and seasonal foliage. The overall effect felt organic and gathered, almost as though the flowers naturally belonged inside the historic interiors of the Josephine Butler Parks Center. Judith carried a richly textured bouquet designed with layers of fern, pine, liquidambar foliage, orange asclepia, burgundy ranunculus, hanging amaranthus, hypericum berries, and fiddlehead fern curls. The bouquet had movement and dimension while still maintaining an elegant hand-tied shape finished with ivory satin ribbon.

The ceremony design focused on a birch chuppah accented with loose forest-inspired greenery and warm fall flowers. Ferns and foliage softened the base of the structure while clusters of berries and autumn blooms framed the upper corners. Rather than feeling overly formal, the design created an atmosphere that felt intimate and welcoming within the ceremony space.

One of the things that worked especially well about this wedding was the layering of texture throughout the entire design. Ferns, berries, oak leaf hydrangea, eucalyptus, lanterns, birch bark vessels, and trailing greenery all contributed to the overall atmosphere without competing with one another. The floral design felt detailed and thoughtful while still remaining relaxed and natural.

For the reception, guests were welcomed by a lush escort card table arrangement overflowing with fall branches, dahlias, hydrangea, roses, peach stock, berries, and rose hips displayed in a classic urn. The arrangement immediately established the warm autumn palette that continued throughout the evening.

Dinner tables alternated between floral centerpieces and lantern arrangements to create movement throughout the room. The lower floral designs featured burgundy dahlias, peach stock, orange garden roses, ranunculus, astilbe, eucalyptus, and layered greenery arranged inside birch bark pots. Clusters of gold and pink mercury glass votives surrounded the flowers and added soft candlelight to each table.

The lantern centerpieces introduced another layer of warmth into the reception. Gold lanterns wrapped with floral wreaths of peach stock, orange spray roses, hypericum berries, eucalyptus, and fern foliage helped the room feel collected and welcoming rather than overly uniform.

Even the smaller details contributed to the overall design story. Individual sprigs of Italian ruscus placed at each guest setting added another natural element to the tablescape and reinforced the woodland-inspired atmosphere throughout the reception.

Judith and Ben’s Josephine Butler Parks Center wedding was such a beautiful example of how fall wedding flowers can feel elegant, textured, and inviting all at once. The combination of layered florals, candlelight, woodland details, and seasonal color created a celebration that felt warm from the moment guests arrived through the final dance of the evening.

Theres something about September that always feels like a turning point. The days are still warm, but the morning is a bit cooler. School is back in session. The light starts to change. And after a long DC summer, you do all get that first day when you can open the door and think, yes, fall really is coming. 🍁

For me fall has always been tied to the rhythm of the school year. Kids going back to school and calendars filling up. Pulling sweaters out of the back of the closet, and thinking about Halloween before you’re quite ready to admit summer is over.

In the studio, autumn has another rhythm. September and October weddings - arguably our busiest time of the year - paired with all sorts of fun things. Pods, berries, grasses and all sorts of funky things.

I think there’s a reason fall weddings always feel so right. It’s a season built around change. The landscape shifts, the light softens, the year begins winding down… and in the midst of that, two people choose to begin something.

Maybe that’s what I love about this time of year. Autumn can feel nostalgic and hopeful at the same time. So here’s to another fall wedding season, changing leaves, cooler nights (no mosquitoes), celebrations and all the new beginnings still ahead.
Classic roses. Ethereal baby’s breath. And bleached ruscus for some fashion forward style. Classic with an edge.
