Venue Spotlight: Anderson House

Anderson House wedding reception

Our venue spotlight continues this week with Anderson House. This gorgeous Beaux Arts masterpiece is a stunning wedding venue in Dupont Circle. It’s not exactly hidden, but more than one person I know has wondered what was behind the imposing facade.

About

Designed by the firm of Little and Browne of Boston, the building was completed In the spring of 1905, and immediately took its place as one of our capital city’s most fashionable mansions. The Florentine-style villa served as the winter residence of Larz Anderson, an American diplomat, and his wife Isabel, an author. Upon Anderson’s death, his widow gifted the building and its contents to the Society of the Cincinnati, which uses it as its headquarters and a museum today.

From the moment you walk up to Anderson House, the gilded age mansion captures one’s attention. From the impressive front drive, to carved wood walls, gilded paper mache ceilings, ornate iron staircases, art-filled galleries, intricate marble floors and a delightful garden, many incredible elements fill the space. It has very quickly become one of our favorite venues in the city.

Location: Dupont Circle

Capacity:

Up to 170 seated guests for reception and seated dinner.

130 seated comfortably in one room.

Pro Tips:

While ornate and classic, Anderson House is still largely neutral  in scheme. It gives couples ample opportunity to play the space up in a way that suits their style. We love a bold fall palette or a bright spring one to really enliven the space and bring in the style of the season. There are so many stunning features, from the entry to the fireplace mantle to the pool outside. Adding little extra touches to these areas will make your guests think you thought of everything!

A rooftop celebration that proves timeless can still be bold. For Elaine & Trey’s wedding at Capitol View at 400, we leaned into classic green and white, but elevated it with sculptural greenery installations, gold Harlow stands, and skyline views that stretched for miles. A ceiling of foliage softened the tented space, while sleek black bridesmaid dresses added contrast and edge. Clean, refined, and impossibly romantic.

It’s Bike to Work Day — and while we usually pedal toward petals, we couldn’t resist sharing this creative twist from Elle & Bryan, one of our couples who wheeled their love of cycling straight into the ceremony. 🚲✨

Elle & Bryan’s wedding at Dumbarton House was full of charm, personal touches, and one especially fun nod to their love of cycling. Bicycle wheels became sculptural backdrops, proving that when it comes to personal touches, there’s no such thing as too niche.

Designing florals around unexpected objects? That’s our lane. And yes — it was all uphill in the best possible way.
