A rooftop ceremony overlooking the Capitol always feels quintessentially Washington, DC, and Mey & Payton’s wedding at 101 Constitution fully embraced that setting with clean white flowers, layered greenery, and candlelit reception details that felt timeless without becoming overly formal. The wedding also carried a personal connection for us because the year prior we had designed Mey’s twin sister Iona’s wedding at DACOR Bacon House. While the two celebrations had completely different aesthetics and venues, there was something especially meaningful about getting to design for both sisters and seeing how each wedding reflected its own distinct personality.
For Mey & Payton’s wedding, the floral direction stayed intentionally restrained and elegant. White flowers paired with layered greenery created a look that felt modern, romantic, and perfectly suited to the clean architectural lines and sweeping rooftop views at 101 Constitution. Eucalyptus played a major role throughout the floral design, bringing softness and movement into the palette while also introducing subtle blue-green tones that complemented the skyline beautifully. Rather than relying heavily on color, the flowers focused more on texture, candlelight, and atmosphere.
The ceremony took place on the rooftop with the Capitol dome visible directly behind the couple. A ground floral arch framed the ceremony space without blocking the view, allowing the architecture and skyline to remain central to the experience. The lower floral installation created a softer, more organic feel than a traditional elevated arch and worked especially well against the open rooftop backdrop.
One of the things we love most about weddings at 101 Constitution is that the venue already provides so much visual impact on its own. The city views become part of the design, particularly at sunset when the light shifts across the rooftop and the Capitol begins to glow in the background. Floral design here works best when it enhances the atmosphere rather than competes with it.
For the reception, the floral styling continued with classic candlelight throughout the tables. The candles added warmth and intimacy to the modern rooftop setting and helped transition the evening from ceremony into reception seamlessly.
The overall design struck a balance that can sometimes be difficult to achieve in rooftop weddings. It felt elevated and distinctly DC without becoming overly sleek or minimal. The flowers softened the space while still allowing the setting itself to remain the focal point.
Mey & Payton’s wedding was such a beautiful example of how timeless wedding flowers can feel fresh and contemporary when paired with thoughtful design and an incredible location. Between the rooftop views, the soft movement of eucalyptus, and the candlelit reception atmosphere, the entire evening felt romantic, relaxed, and unmistakably Washington.
