Seasonal Inspiration: Fall Wedding Flowers

Seasonal Inspiration: Fall Wedding Flowers

One of the things we love about the DC area is the change of seasons. From spring to summer to autumn to winter, the dramatic changes in the landscape can really inspire our floral creativity! Embracing a vision that complements the season is something we always encourage – and it’s an approach that also creates cohesiveness for the wedding scheme! We’ve put together a series of blog posts full of wedding inspiration for each season. Since we’re now on the cusp of autumn, our first part of the series is focused on fall wedding flowers.

Autumnal Floral Palettes

Fall wedding flowers come is a wide variety of colors, shapes and textures. The most traditional fall scheme finds inspiration in the color changing foliage of trees – fiery reds, oranges and yellows. But that’s not the only approach. Dusty hues of soft green eucalyptus and olive leaf, dusty pinks and lavenders, and touches of brown from pods and berries can lend a fall feel to any color palette. Fall also reminds us of rich, jewel-toned blooms, like the moody hues of burgundy dahlia, deep burgundy smokebush and hibiscus foliage, and rich burgundy scabiosa to name a few! Regardless of what autumn means to you, ultimately what sets fall apart is TEXTURE! It’s the season of pods and berries, lush foliage, branches – even things like feathers! – that hint of wildness as nature takes its next turn.

Before we dive into specific autumn blooms, here are some of our favorite fall floral palettes from past Petal’s Edge weddings.

The beginning of any wedding design is the overall color palette. Once that is decided, we can begin putting together specific flower recipes. Whether you want a scheme that is more formal and tailored or one that feels loose and organic, there’s a seasonal design that will meet your needs. Some of our favorite fall blooms are pictured below. We LOVE to use these in fall weddings. (Where noted, inspiration photos sourced via Pinterest).

Double duty, done beautifully.

For Claire & Sean’s wedding at the Dockmaster’s Building, we created a floral garland for their ceremony arch. Eleegant, lush, and just dramatic enough to hold its own against the waterfront backdrop.

But we weren’t done yet. That same garland made a second appearance, repurposed to trail down the length of their head table. Thoughtful, sustainable, and completely gorgeous. Because we believe a good floral moment deserves an encore.

Some weddings are magic. ✨

This one just took a cart, a loading dock, stairs, ramps, 250 feet of hallway, and a very determined florist team.

Here’s what you don’t see in the final gallery: the cardio, the zip ties, the setup hustle. But would we do it all again for this dreamy blue-and-white moment we created for Jenni & Aaron at the Omni Shoreham? Absolutely.

Some weddings are sweet.

This one? Smart, stylish, and just a little unexpected.

At Eaton DC, where there’s a record player in the lobby and intention in every detail, we brought florals that nodded to tradition. White and blush, gold compotes, lush greenery - and then we slipped in a few surprises (hello, orchids). From a ceremony full of movement to tall reception designs that played with height and shape, this wedding proved modern love doesn’t have to be minimal.
