Winery-Inspired St Francis Hall Wedding

We must confess. We fall in love with our couples as much as we do with the designs we work together to create with them. Sasha had a grand, winery-inspired St Francis Hall wedding – modern and elegant, classic to the core, with rustic winery-inspired touches throughout. Blending those elements proved stunning. Love, love, LOVE! Sasha’s bouquet featured the simple and clean modern lines of burgundy cymbidium orchids, eggplant mini-calla lilies, and ivory roses finished with curly willow branches vining lightly around the perimeter of the bouquet for a rustic touch to evoke the feel of a winery. Burgundy cymbidium orchids graced her hair. The bridesmaids carried lush bouquets of ivory and pale pink roses, burgundy cymbidiums, and burgundy mini-calla lilies finished with earthy touches of scabiosa pods and seeded eucalyptus.

The ceremony took place at Holy Comforter Church. We love how gleefully happy they look. As guests arrived at the winery-inspired St Francis Hall wedding, they were greeted with an elegant, handblown glass vase filled with wine corks! You would not believe how many wine corks there were! (Special thanks to Fibre Space who put us in touch with La Fromagerie. It’s great to have friends in our Old Town business community.) The vase was topped with a dramatic design of red antique hydrangea, red orchids, Black Magic and Quicksand roses, and burgundy spray roses finished with burgundy hanging amaranthus and seeded eucalyptus foliage. The reception alternated between elegant tall and low designs in rich shades of wine and champagne.

Tall designs were elevated on an elegant, old world-styled cathedral candlestick, each holding classic designs of hydrangea, roses, spray roses finished with burgundy hanging amaranthus and seeded eucalyptus, the hues alternating between deep rich burgundies and champagnes – fitting for a winery-inspired St Francis Hall Wedding. A small, wooden wine crates held the low designs, each arrangement featuring roses, hydrangea, dahlia, callas, and spray roses finished with rustic accents of kiwi vine. A dramatic cascade of wedding flowers proceeded down one side of the cake.

Peonies, Juliet garden roses, ranunculus, sweet pea, stock, campanula... Basically all the flowers you hope will show up when someone tells you they’re getting married in May.⁣

We kept everything loose and gardeny, in peaches, soft blush, white and those wonderful slightly faded greens that keep pastels from becoming too sugary. And at Woodlawn, surrounded by actual spring? So, so pretty.⁣
This is exactly why May flowers have my heart.⁣
Their reception arrangements continued that mix of garden roses, tea roses, spray roses, ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, campanula and sweet pea.⁣

For Alexandra & Sam’s ceremony, the stage was framed with a lush, deconstructed arch, creating a focal point against the hall’s burgundy proscenium drape. As the music began and Alexandra walked down the aisle, everything came together in that way it only does once. The architecture, the flowers, the lighting, and two people about to start their marriage. It is always a privilege to help shape that moment.⁣

Theres something about September that always feels like a turning point. The days are still warm, but the morning is a bit cooler. School is back in session. The light starts to change. And after a long DC summer, you do all get that first day when you can open the door and think, yes, fall really is coming. 🍁

For me fall has always been tied to the rhythm of the school year. Kids going back to school and calendars filling up. Pulling sweaters out of the back of the closet, and thinking about Halloween before you’re quite ready to admit summer is over.

In the studio, autumn has another rhythm. September and October weddings - arguably our busiest time of the year - paired with all sorts of fun things. Pods, berries, grasses and all sorts of funky things.

I think there’s a reason fall weddings always feel so right. It’s a season built around change. The landscape shifts, the light softens, the year begins winding down… and in the midst of that, two people choose to begin something.

Maybe that’s what I love about this time of year. Autumn can feel nostalgic and hopeful at the same time. So here’s to another fall wedding season, changing leaves, cooler nights (no mosquitoes), celebrations and all the new beginnings still ahead.
