A Historic DC Gem
Meridian House isn’t just a venue. It is a chapter of Washington’s cultural story. Built in 1921 by Ambassador Irwin Boyle Laughlin and designed by John Russell Pope (the same architect behind the Jefferson Memorial!), the home reflects 18th-century French design. From the Mortlake tapestry in the drawing room to the linden-tree allee in the gardens, the property carries a timeless elegance that elevates any celebration. As florists, we see how this blend of history and artistry makes the perfect canvas for wedding flowers.
Florals in the Gardens
The three acres of gardens are the heart of Meridian House. Couples often exchange vows in the Linden Grove, beneath the shade of symmetrical tree rows, or near the Italian marble fountain. These natural elements pair beautifully with floral designs that lean into the romantic and organic: think climbing roses or smilax to frame the grove, petal-strewn aisles, or meadow-inspired ground arrangements that echo the gardens without overwhelming them.
Inside the Mansion
The interiors provide a dramatic counterpoint to the lush outdoor spaces. Dark wood paneling, Waterford crystal chandeliers, and French doors create a rich, textural backdrop. Florals here work best when they enhance, not compete. Low, elegant compotes or candle-lined mantels feel right at home in the library and drawing room. For larger receptions, floral installations in the loggia create a striking indoor-outdoor flow as guests move between cocktails and dinner.
Planning Reception Flowers at Meridian House
Meridian House is ideal for intimate weddings of up to 130 seated guests. Because rooms interconnect, we often recommend designs that guide the eye and subtly move guests through the spaces: garlands along the loggia, bud vases on cocktail tables in the gallery, or a dramatic escort card display near the entry. For dinner, lush floral runners or clusters of compotes down long tables keep the atmosphere refined and connected to the historic surroundings.
Floral Design for Your Meridian House Wedding
With so many stunning features, the key for a Meridian House wedding is to highlight them, whether embracing the natural architectural features as is or accenting them with flowers. We love wreaths on the doors, heavy flowers and greenery on the staircase, and a lush design on the fireplace mantle to create a strong focal point in the room. As a former residence, intimacy is a natural direction to go for, and while we definitely have designed tall arrangements in the space to balance the high ceilings, guest tables look great with assorted low arrangements and lots of candles. Even long rectangle tables embrace the intimacy of the space (but depend greatly on your guest count!) And don’t forget the garden and grove! They are both wonderful sites for the ceremony, and if you’re willing to risk rain, make for a stunning outdoor reception.
-
Play with scale. The high ceilings and symmetrical gardens allow for both statement pieces (like a floral arch in the grove) and delicate details (like petite arrangements in antique vessels).
-
Respect the architecture. Instead of overpowering the interiors, use florals that highlight fireplaces, mantels, and architectural niches.
-
Seasonal abundance. Because the gardens are already lush, spring peonies, summer roses, or autumn dahlias feel especially at home here.
-
Lighting is everything. Pair florals with candlelight to bring softness into the darker paneled rooms.
A wedding at Meridian House is as much about atmosphere as it is about history. With the right floral design, the venue transforms into a living canvas—romantic, refined, and deeply personal to each couple.
At Petal’s Edge, we’ve seen how flowers breathe life into this storied mansion, whether through a whisper of petals along a garden aisle or a dramatic canopy in the loggia. If you’re planning a Meridian House wedding, we’d love to help you create something unforgettable.
