Roses, Horses, and Kentucky Derby Glamour

Roses, Horses, and Kentucky Derby Glamour

Riders up! At a private estate in McLean, VA, we had the immense pleasure of being the floral designer for a Kentucky Derby pre-party celebration hosted by Modern Luxury DC Magazine and Woodford Reserve, an event as grand and colorful as the race itself.

When you think of the Kentucky Derby, elegant hats, bourbon, and fast horses probably come to mind. But there’s a reason why this race is known as the Run for the Roses! The Kentucky Derby has been a beacon of tradition since its inception. The iconic red rose, symbolizing passion and victory, has adorned the winning horse for over a century. We took inspiration from this rich history to create a floral decor that was nothing short of a winner.

Greeting guests upon arrival, two beautiful horses wore lush wreaths of red roses, transforming them into living, breathing symbols of Derby pride. It was a sight to behold, blending the beauty of nature with the elegance of tradition. It set the tone for an event steeped in elegance and equestrian charm. The entrance was a showstopper, a floral nod to the grandeur of the Derby. But wait, there’s more! Entering the home, a majestic white ceramic horse bust was crowned with a ring of vibrant red roses and variegated ivy.

Inside, the festivities continued with a stunning array of floral designs. Mint juleps with red roses were scattered throughout the house, and when going outside, for a twist on traditional, additional mint julep cups paired fragrant red roses with lavender lilac, added a touch of classic Derby charm to the decor. A garland of red roses gracefully adorned the bar, and suspended lanterns above the kitchen island were softened with delicate greenery, adding a touch of whimsy and sophistication.

Reminiscent of the winner’s trophy, silver urns held lush designs of red and burgundy roses. A classic urn arrangement was seated on the indoor bar, featuring a loose and airy design of red roses and lilac, capturing the essence of the Derby’s storied history and the luxurious touch we brought to the event.

Of course, no Kentucky Derby event would be complete without a nod to its sponsors. A “winner’s circle” archway of lush smilax foliage and red roses, emblazoned with a sign reading “Woodford Reserve,” paid homage to one of the day’s celebrated sponsors, adding a touch of branded elegance to the festivities.

At Petal’s Edge, we don’t just create floral arrangements; we craft experiences that leave lasting impressions. Whether it’s a Derby celebration or an intimate gathering, our design acumen ensures your event is as unforgettable as a photo finish. Ready to make your next event a winner? It’s Bike to Work Day — and while we usually pedal toward petals, we couldn’t resist sharing this creative twist from Elle & Bryan, one of our couples who wheeled their love of cycling straight into the ceremony. 🚲✨

Elle & Bryan’s wedding at Dumbarton House was full of charm, personal touches, and one especially fun nod to their love of cycling. Bicycle wheels became sculptural backdrops, proving that when it comes to personal touches, there’s no such thing as too niche.

Designing florals around unexpected objects? That’s our lane. And yes — it was all uphill in the best possible way.

A night of mystery and masquerade — and the perfect way to fête the 10th anniversary of The Scout Guide Alexandria and the launch of Vol. 10! ✨

We loved adding our signature touch of floral drama to this year’s launch party at the Hotel Heron. From a moody and dramatic entrance piece to a flower-filled car, sculptural arrangements on cocktail tables and elevated bar arrangements casting feathered shadows and moody textures, this event let us play in a world of whimsy and wonder.

We’re proud to be part of a guide that champions small businesses and celebrates creativity in our community. Supporting local means investing in the makers, doers, and dreamers who make Alexandria vibrant — and The Scout Guide does just that, beautifully. Cheers to Vol. 10! Special thanks to Sarah and Claire for always being so supportive and encouraging.
