Supporting Federal Employees & Contractors After Mass Layoffs

At Petal’s Edge, we believe in the power of flowers—not just for celebrations, but for comfort, connection, and kindness. As a florist in the Washington, D.C. metro area, we see firsthand how deeply tied our community is to the federal government, and when upheaval strikes, it affects our family, friends, neighbors, and clients in profound ways.

The recent mass layoffs of federal employees and contractors due to the restructuring of the federal government have sent shockwaves through the region. Hundreds of workers suddenly found themselves without jobs, facing uncertainty and stress. While we can’t fix the bigger issues at play, we can do what we do best—spread a little beauty in difficult times.

How It Started

When news of the layoffs broke, we wanted to find a way to offer support. Flowers may not change someone’s circumstances, but they can provide a small, tangible moment of joy in the midst of uncertainty. So we launched Flowers for Feds, an initiative to give away free bouquets to affected federal employees and contractors. No strings attached—just a little pick-me-up and reminder that people care.

A Simple Gesture, A Big Impact

What began as a quiet act of kindness quickly grew. As people stopped by to pick up flowers, they shared their stories—of unexpected job loss, uncertainty about the future, and the challenges of navigating sudden change. Some took flowers to brighten their homes, others to gift to a friend or family member who had supported them during the transition.

The response was overwhelming. The simple act of handing someone a bouquet became a meaningful exchange, a way to acknowledge loss while offering a moment of beauty and hope.

We’ve been grateful to have had the initiative shared on Washingtonian, WTOP, ABC-7, and the Washington Post.

How You Can Help

If you’d like to support Flowers for Feds, there are a few ways to get involved:
💐 Spread the Word – If you know someone impacted by the layoffs, let them know they’re welcome to stop by our shop for a free bouquet.
🌸 Pay It Forward – Purchasing flowers from Petal’s Edge helps us keep this initiative going, ensuring we have blooms to share.
🌿 Share Kindness – Whether it’s flowers, a note, or a kind gesture, small acts of support can mean the world to those going through tough times.

We know flowers won’t fix everything, but they can serve as a reminder that even in uncertainty, there’s still beauty and kindness in the world. If you or someone you know has been affected by the layoffs, stop by—we’d love to share a little floral joy with you.

We are back at Woodend this coming week, and it has us reminiscing about Amanda and Jack’s whimsical, wonderful, William Morris-inspired dream of a wedding with an Art Nouveau twist. The wedding layered bohemian textures, vintage details, woodland creatures and, of course, romantic blooms into a palette that felt both grounded and poetic. Think climbing vines, golden light, and flowers that felt like they had stepped out of an heirloom wallpaper print - in the best way. We’re still swooning. 💫

A rooftop celebration that proves timeless can still be bold. For Elaine & Trey’s wedding at Capitol View at 400, we leaned into classic green and white, but elevated it with sculptural greenery installations, gold Harlow stands, and skyline views that stretched for miles. A ceiling of foliage softened the tented space, while sleek black bridesmaid dresses added contrast and edge. Clean, refined, and impossibly romantic.
