A Blooming Guide to Choose the Perfect Flowers
As you dive into the world of wedding planning, don’t forget about the littlest member of your bridal party – the adorable flower girl. You may find yourself wondering about flower girl etiquette, and while there are a few elements to ponder, choosing the perfect flowers for your flower girl can add an extra touch of enchantment to your special day. Get ready to be inspired by a world of blooming possibilities!
Classic Petal Path
When it comes to flower girl etiquette, one of the most traditional and charming options for a flower girl is to have her scatter petals down the aisle. Delicate rose petals, dainty daisies, or fragrant lavender buds create a whimsical and romantic atmosphere. Coordinate the petals with your overall floral theme to ensure a cohesive and picturesque scene. Consider a flower basket adorned with ribbons or a floral wand for a touch of fairy-tale magic.
Pro Tip: A flower girl will only scatter so many petals along the aisle, if any at all given her age. If you have a lush bed of petals in mind, be sure to have a good amount pre-set, and perhaps have your flower girl come along with a contrasting color.
Floral Crown Princess
Transform your flower girl into a regal princess with a stunning floral crown. Choose small, delicate flowers such as baby’s breath, spray roses, or a textured mix of small blooms to create an ethereal and feminine crown. You can match the crown to your own bridal bouquet or opt for complementary colors that will make her stand out. This flower girl option is perfect for a wildflower or garden-inspired wedding.
Pro Tip: Be sure that you check with the flower girl’s parents before giving her one. Some young children don’t handle having anything on their heads.
Elegant Mini Bouquet
It is becoming more and more common for venues from churches to outdoor locations to prohibit rose petals. We get it – even a small amount of rose petals can make a giant mess. We know first hand how challenging and time consuming it can be to clean up squished flower petals. As much as it pains us to admit it, dark colored flowers can really stain light carpets.
For a sophisticated touch, consider giving your flower girl a miniature version of your bridal and bridesmaids’ bouquet. There is no flower girl etiquette that dictates which is preferable. Choose more petite blooms and create a beautiful, scaled-down bouquet. Flowers that are easy to hold include spray roses, ranunculus, or hydrangeas. Wrap the stems with a delicate ribbon that complements your color palette for a polished and coordinated look.
Charming Flower Wand
Add a touch of whimsy to your flower girl’s ensemble with a delightful flower wand. Choose a single focal flower, such as a large peony or sunflower, and surround it with smaller blooms and greenery. Mini-callas are one of our favorite floral choices for wands, as the sleek look of the flower works well in this design. Attach ribbons in coordinating colors to create flowing streamers. Not only will this flower girl option look adorable, but it will also keep her entertained and engaged throughout the ceremony.
Basket Arrangement
Still feeling like you want the flower girl to have an actual basket? An arrangement nestled in the basket is perfect. No need to drop any flowers, and the basket look is preserved. For another twist on carrying a basket, we had a couple whose flower girls handed out single rose stems as they proceeded along the aisle.
Pomander Ball
For older girls (generally 5 and up) a pomander ball is always adorable choice. Derived from the French term pomme d’ambre, and sometimes called a kissing ball, the pomander is said to bring good occasion. We typically advise couples to give them only to older flower girls, the construction tends to make these adorable floral orbs both heavy and delicate.
Pro Tip: Pomander balls can be relatively expensive compared to other items due to the quantity of both flowers and labor required. They can be designed with a range of blooms, from button mums, carnations and baby’s breath on the more frugal side to pricier choices such as roses, hydrangea, and many, many other options.
Delicate Flower Hair Accessories
Enhance your flower girl’s natural beauty with a delicate floral hair accessory. Adorn her hairstyle with small blooms or floral accents that match the bridal party’s flowers. Create a mini flower crown, tuck blooms into a braided hairstyle, or attach flowers to a hair clip or headband. This flower girl option adds a touch of elegance and whimsy to her overall look.
Breaking the Rules
Whether she scatters petals, wears a floral crown, or carries a mini bouquet, flower girl options are endless. Flower girl etiquette has changed, however, and we are seeing couples personalize this role in many ways, from flower boys, flower grandma and grandpas, flower groomsmen and flower dogs! Your creativity is the limit! You do you!
