Dear Petal’s Edge,
I’m really loving all these Pinterest pictures of greenery garlands and flowers down the center of a long table. But I’m a little concerned about the cost. What does something like that cost and what are some ways of getting a similar impact for less?

Dear Sarah,
What a great question! We have seen those pictures too (and done a few ourselves!) and think greenery garlands are a really spectacular look for anyone going for that rustic, garden-y or organic feel for their wedding. But they can get very pricey, as garland, which is sold by the foot, can add up quickly if you have a lot of long tables.
As for the cost of garland (in the DC metro region) prices for greenery garland usually range from $25-50 per foot or more, depending on how thick and lush the garland is, how many different types of greenery are in it, and how many flowers are added. Many of the Pinterest pictures you have seen are no doubt the most luxurious version of the idea – thick if not doubled garlands on very wide tables using varying types of greenery cascading to the floor on each end of the table, lots of flowers tucked in and around the flowers and either small floral arrangements or candles added along the length. Since each single element adds to the cost of the centerpiece, the total cost for a 8′ table can be anywhere from $300-500 per table, depending on your final choices.
But it is totally possible to get this look for less.
Keep your tables narrower. Using a 30-36″ rectangular table, rather than a 48″ one, will help the center of the table feel more full with less.
Simplify. A more simple garland, of just one type of greenery, will bring costs down without sacrificing the look. Keeping the garland limited to the length of the table, rather than having it cascade to the floor, will also help to cut your costs. Choosing to have fewer flowers, or none at all, will also help.
Candles are you friend. A collection of simple pillar or votive candles, or a few small bud vases, will minimize the cost impact. A look like this, for an 8′ table, will be closer to $100-200, depending on your choices.
I hope that helps! Best wishes with your wedding!

What type of greenery is in the garland pictured? I like eucalyptus but this looks greener and more lush. Thanks!
Gerry says
Thanks for asking, Kristen! Photos can indeed be deceiving. This garland is a mix of silver collar eucalyptus, willow eucalyptus, and salal. Eucalyptus tends to have a gray-green cast, whereas salal is a brighter, more traditional “leaf green”.

How much would you charge for a 7ft Eucalyptus and springer I garland with about a dozen roses and one bunch of Lisianthus
